Last Saturday’s Repair Cafe was great fun. We met lots of new faces some of whom came along having seen this in The Argus:
Izzie our jewellery expert showed people how to fix their necklaces and bracelets
Helping Hannah add new beads in with the remains of a necklace which had exploded to create a lovely new bracelet.
Whilst in darning corner…
Tom of Holland showed others how to mend the holes in their clothes:
Hedvig mended the elbow of her sweater
Irene repaired a moth hole with a lovely contrasting colour of thread
And Susanne used a red to pick out and match some of the colour details in her sweater
I learnt how to use a combination of blanket stitch and feather stitch to darn up moth holes in a favourite woollen dress to create a second layer of pattern over the dresses pattern.
The sewing machine was put to good use as usual
And Izzie won Fred’s heart through helping him to mend his pockets!
Unfortunately, due to work commitments we have lost our electrical repair expert for this Saturday’s repair cafe, but don’t you worry we will still be getting together at Bom-bane’s to mend textiles, clothing and jewellery and have a cuppa.
We’ll have a sewing machine and other tools and materials for sewing, darning, crocheting, fixing clasps and re-threading earrings, necklaces and bracelets.
Come and say hello, or to fix that hole you’ve been putting off all this time!
We are so pleased to have an electrical expert (another Tom) joining us at the next repair cafe at Bom-Banes on Saturday 23rd March from 11am-3pm.
If you are like me and learnt to change a plug at school but can’t remember which wire goes where, come along! Tom will be on hand to help with fitting or changing plugs and fuses so bring your lamps, hair dryers, toasters or other small appliances and learn how to get them working again from a qualified electrician.
We will also have Izzie our jewellery and sewing expert at the cafe to offer advice for repairing clothing and textiles.
Tom will be bringing tools for electrical repairs and as usual we will have a sewing machine and other implements and materials for repairing clothes, textiles and jewellery.
Come along if you’d like to learn how to repair something, or use the tools, or if you’d just like to get on with some repair projects in the company of others.

As it’s International Women’s Day:
Yesterday we held a Repair Café at Brighton University as part of #greenweek2013. We set up at the back of the canteen at the Grand Parade campus and were joined for a chat by students and staff.
Jewellery tools, darning and stitching were used to repair clothing and accessories and an accidental colour theme emerged!
The Swiss darning taught by Tom of Holland in the previous repair cafe progressed and a map of Great Britain now seems to be taking shape on the elbow of my favourite cardigan!
By request we will hold a weekly repair cafe in the same place on Thursday afternoons from 2-4pm during term time. This is open to all staff and students at Brighton University. Participation is free or by donation towards materials and tools. Spread the word!
